Plan Overview
South Knik River is an unincorporated community located in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough in South Central Alaska. The community borders along the south side of the Knik River, which flows into the Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet. South Knik River is located 10 miles south of Palmer on the Old Glenn Highway. The planning area encompasses approximately 90.4 square miles of land and 2.8 square miles of water. The South Knik River Area is a diverse community. Many of the residents and their families have lived in the area for generations, while others have recently moved in. Through the community survey conducted in May of 2009, a snapshot was created that described the community’s current residential profile. Questions were asked regarding where people lived in the community, where they worked, and if they were full time residents. Information gathered from these questions gave the citizen planning team information needed to help tailor the comprehensive to best reflect the South Knik River Community residents.
