Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Yentna River flood advisory

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Thursday, June 20, 2013

As the unusually warm temperatures continue in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, rivers and creeks are at high levels. Please be careful when enjoying the waterways right now. Floating debris is dangerous to boaters on the Yentna River. Last Sunday, two kayakers were rescued in the swift, cold Little Susitna River.

The weather forecast predicts 70-degree temperatures through the weekend. The National Weather Service  has issued a flood advisory for melting snow in the Susitna Valley along the Yentna River at lake Creek until 10 am Friday. The 80- and 90-degree temperatures last week have caused significant snowmelt runoff in the western Susitna area. Lake Creek on the Yentna River has been steadily rising and is 0.6 feet below the 20.5 foot flood stage. It is forecast to rise above flood stage late tonight or early tomorrow before cresting near 20.7 feet Thursday afternoon, reports Dennis Brodigan, Borough Director of Emergency Services.

Debris reported in the river could be hazardous to boaters. At forecast levels Anglers Inn & King Point Lodges will likely have water in several cabins. Please be cautious in low-lying areas on the Yentna and report any minor flooding to law enforcement.
