Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Sunday, March 22, 2009

MAT-SU—6:15 a.m.—Redoubt volcano erupted five times beginning last night at 10:48 p.m. and continuing through this morning. As of 2:40 a.m. the community of Skwentna reported light ashfall. Trapper Creek and Talkeetna reported light ashfall as well. The ashfall is light at an expected 1-2 millimeters.

As of 6 a.m., winds were pushing the ash west, away from populated areas toward the Alaska Range. Volcanic unrest continues.

The ashfall as of 6 a.m. is not expected in the Core Area of the Borough.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough activated a skeleton crew in the Emergency Operations Center. Emergency responders in the Susitna Valley were notified, including Willow, Talkeetna, and Trapper Creek areas.

All schools in the MAT-SU Borough remain open today.

An ashfall advisory is now in effect until 8 a.m. An ashfall advisory means that ash will be deposited in the advisory area. People in areas of ashfall should seal windows and doors, protect electronics, and cover air intakes with nylons. Bring pets indoors if possible. Minimize driving.
