Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Update of flood warning

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Sunday, August 27, 2006

EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER-- The flood warning has been cancelled for the Matanuska Valley including Palmer, Wasilla, Sutton, and Chickaloon. However, the warning has been extended for the Susitna Valley until 8:00pm Monday night for creeks along the Parks highway including the Talkeetna, Willow, and Little Su.

The water level at Willow Creek and the Parks Highway has lowered by 2' and will hopefully continue to decrease throughout the day. According to the National Weather Service, showers will diminish this evening in the Matanuska Valley with partly sunny skies tomorrow, however, a new front might move in Wednesday night.

The Emergency Operations Center will set up referral information stations at the Sunshine Fire Station and Willow Community Center. These stations will provide residents with the necessary contact information to receive aide. We will post the time they will be open as soon as that information becomes available.

There is currently one shelter open, the Willow Community Center, offering dry space, coffee and food. The Red Cross will mobilize and provide food for the people manning the barricades at the road closures and the National Guards filling sandbags.

Keith Rountree, Public Works Director with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough stated there are only five Borough roads closed that will affect school bus transportation Tuesday morning.

A complete list of road closures is posted on the Borough's website at www.matsugov.us.
