Tree clearing begins on Bogard Road project

Tree-clearing has begun on a 2.2 mile section of the Bogard Road Extension project from E. Arctic Avenue to W. 49th State Street.  The contractor, Jim Psenak Construction, will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to limit disturbance to residents in the area. The project is the Borough’s largest road construction project to date.

Tree clearing has begun near the intersection of 49^th State Street and Colony Way just east of Colony High School and will proceed east toward Arctic Avenue. 

Tree clearing and staging in the wood storage area is expected to last through the end of March.  A personal use firewood sale is expected to occur once the staging of wood is complete.  The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Land & Resource Management Division will issue a public notice for the details of the upcoming sale.  Residents can contact Land & Resource Management at 861-7869 with any personal use firewood sale questions.

The Bogard Extension Project is scheduled to go out to bid at the end of March through the end of April with a contract award in mid-May.  Construction will commence in June 2014 with completion of the project in Fall 2015.  The summer of 2014 construction will include preparing the road base on the new segment of road while completing fairly extensive utility relocation on Arctic Avenue between Palmer High School and the Glenn Highway.  Paving will be completed in 2015 along with a new traffic signal at the intersection of Felton St. and Arctic Ave. near Palmer High School.

Bogard Road Extension is part of building an additional east-west corridor in the core area of the Borough.  The project will provide a two-lane road with a separated pathway.  This portion of the project will cost about $22 million.  Funding came through the State Legislature. 

Additional funding has been requested for Phase 2, which includes realigning the intersection at Colony Way and 49^th State Street near Colony High School as well as other safety improvements near Colony High and Middle Schools.  This project also incorporates an extension to the City of Palmer Water Main along the roadway to 49^th State Street as part of a separate legislative grant.
