Transportation changes afoot in Mat-Su

Significant transportation changes are afoot in the next 5-10 years in the MAT-SU. A multitude of agencies are participating in an upcoming Transportation Fair to present numerous projects and ideas in one stop.

• Two roundabouts are in the works, one near MAT-SU Regional Medical Center at Trunk Road, another at Trunk and Bogard Road.
• A one-way couplet in Palmer on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway and Dogwood is planned.
• The Susitna Ferry is launched in 2009 and delivered in 2010.
• The Point MacKenzie Railroad Extension is expected to come on line in 2012.
• New public transit routes are being planned.

These are among the coming significant changes to the way we move about the MAT-SU. The MAT-SU Transportation Fair is a place to learn about such changes and be heard in a single meeting.

"This transportation fair is a must-visit, because transportation is important to everything we do, for the economy, for work, for play," said Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Curt Menard. "It's the connection that makes life possible."

The Mat-Su Transportation Fair is Sept. 25, 4-9 p.m. at Raven Hall on the Alaska State Fairgrounds.

• It's the first time that all agencies are coming together to participate in a MAT-SU transportation fair.
• It's the first time that the Mat-Su Borough has put road bonds on the ballot.
• The first Regional Transportation Transit Authority for the Cook Inlet area is being formed.
• It’s the first time Cook Inlet will have a Ferry System.

"If you hate losing your time to meetings, this is the one you can't miss. It's 20 plus meetings in one," said Allen Kemplen, area planner, with Alaska DOT.

The Fair will encompass more than roads. Aviation, rail, ferry, and pedestrian-friendly development will be among the many projects on display.
