Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Tour the Story Map of the LRTP to 2035

In the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, there's some 200 private airstrips, 2,630 miles of roads, 185 miles of mainline track. The transportation network and how it fares with growth and how it may interact with land use is at the core of the 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan. Read the 81-page Plan, published in December, or look through a new interactive online story map of the plan to get the highlights. Moving a bar over a map to the left, for example, shows the level of service for our main roads today. Dragging the bar to the right shows how our main roads may be congested in 2035 if no improvements are made.

The LRTP is the Borough's primary guide for transportation solutions, improvements, funding decisions, and policy development through 2035.

After the 2020 Census, the Borough is expected to form a Metropolitan Planning Organization, a federally-mandated policy organization that oversees transportation planning in an urban area. This latest plan is already well-aligned to prepare for a Metropolitan Planning Organization.
