Redoubt erupts, light ashfall in Susitna Vall

MAT-SU—4:15 a.m.—Mt. Redoubt erupted four times last night. The National Weather Service predicted light ashfall for the Susitna Valley. As of 2:40 a.m. the community of Skwentna reported light ashfall. Light ashfall is possible throughout the Susitna Valley this morning.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough activated a skeleton crew in the Emergency Operations Center beginning at 2 a.m. Emergency responders in the Susitna Valley were notified, including Willow, Talkeetna, and Trapper Creek areas.

All schools in the MAT-SU Borough remain open today.

The ashfall as of 4 a.m. was west of the Susitna River and is not expected in the Core Area of the Borough. The ashfall is light at an expected 1 millimeter. Talkeetna and Trapper Creek reported a light dusting.

An ashfall advisory is now in effect until 8 a.m. An ashfall advisory means that ash will be deposited in the advisory area. People in areas of ashfall should seal windows and doors, protect electronics, and cover air intakes with nylons or cheesecloth and cover open water supplies. Bring pets indoors if possible.
