POINT MACKENZIE ROAD - Fire officials say the fire near Point MacKenzie Road is 500 acres and heading toward a swamp. Winds are blowing the fire south toward Cook Inlet. Two structures were lost to flames. Residents in the area are ready to evacuate themselves if needed. The MAT-SU Borough and the Division of Forestry have been fighting the fire. Chugiak fire is assisting. Sixty MAT-SU firefighters responded. Two air tankers have been dropping retardant, in efforts to attack the head of the fire. Helicopters are dumping water. Some 14 tankers and engines are on scene. Animal Care is on scene for possible evacuations of animals. Red Cross is on scene. The origin of the fire is located at mile four on Point MacKenzie Road. Point MacKenzie Road is located past mile 17 on Knik-Goose Bay Road. A second fire in Big Lake about 1+ acre was also heading toward a swamp. Firefighters have that fire under control.
