POINT MACKENZIE—Beginning March 1, the MAT-SU Borough Solid Waste Division will be placing one 40 yard container at Point MacKenzie. For some, this ends a 68-mile drive just to take out the trash.

The container will be at the Point MacKenzie General Store and Café and will be operated by Jeff and Julie Wendt, owners of the store. It will be a pay site. Fees will be collected by the store clerk. The site will be open six days per week.

DSC_1145The residents of the Point MacKenzie area have expressed excitement that the Borough recognizes their need for a transfer site in their community, according to Audrey Jensen, Solid Waste Division Transfer Site Supervisor.

Residents have to haul their trash to the Big Lake transfer site, to the landfill or pay for curbside pickup from Alaska Waste or Raven Refuse. If they haul it to the landfill, the mileage is 34 miles one way. Having the site located at Point MacKenzie will greatly decrease their drive time.
