New Subdivision Ordinance Signed Into Law

Mat-Su | Stefan Hinman | Friday, April 20, 2012

MAT-SU— Thursday, April 19 Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss with Assembly Member Jim Colver at his side, signed Title 43 into law. The new subdivision regulations will simplify the process for developing land, helping stimulate development in the MAT-SU, DeVilbiss and Colver said.

In his bi-weekly pod cast, Mayor DeVilbiss says it was something much needed. “It seemed an appropriate way in today’s economy to allow for development that isn’t so expensive so people can afford to move to our borough.”  Assembly Member Jim Colver, the sponsor of this Legislation, was present at the signing and sees this as a way to stimulate the MAT-SU economy by encouraging growth. “It’s geared towards the individual taxpayer who has a small tract of land they would like to pass on and want to subdivide it into, up to four lots. In the past they wouldn’t be able to afford it but this will allow them to do it.”

In 2008, Title 27 was adopted which carried with it more extensive regulations. Since then, the Assembly has heard from unhappy residents who felt the regulations were too prohibitive and expensive. After a year and a half of testimonies, the Assembly decided to make changes to the subdivision code. Morphing from one revision to another, this process started in June 2011 and culminated  April 19, 2012.
