PALMER -- A ski area at Hatcher Pass was the subject of a work session last week (March 4). Project Manager Ron Swanson presented two possible scenarios for developing a Nordic and alpine ski areas. Swanson called the proposals the low end, $17 million, and high end, $40 million.

The Assembly directed Swanson to revise the focus to a project that offers amenities and facilities in between the offerings of the two proposals.

This Hatcher Pass project is a new beginning. The management structure sets up an independent board to manage the recreation area, separate from Borough operations.

In coming presentations,  revenue sources will be identified to develop the project.

"I'm looking for ways to build it without placing a burden on taxpayers," Swanson said.

Kirk Duncan, General Manager for Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau, also gave a presentation.

Another meeting is expected in the spring.
