November 30 marks the one year anniversary of the 2018 Earthquake which did so much damage here in the Mat-Su. The work continues as multiple MSB departments are working with local, State and Federal Partners to complete and initiate 29 infrastructure damage repair projects.
THE PROJECTS
o Roads
o Bridges
o Fire Stations
o Schools
· Some roads are Federal Highway roads and are being processed through the State DOT for permanent repairs.
· Currently 8 projects are being introduced to the Borough Assembly for reimbursement consideration totaling $817,199.11. They include debris management, building contents, emergency protective measures and 4 road projects.
· The MSBSD School district is working with the Borough and the State, along with FEMA to determine the most efficient and financially responsible permanent repairs to those facilities.
· FEMA’s Public Assistance program has obligated federal grants totaling $9.3 million for 85 eligible projects, so far throughout the south central region. This will continue to grow as more projects are finalized.
LOOKING FORWARD
· The Matanuska Susitna Borough stresses the concepts of preparedness and resiliency with the following tips:
o Having a go kit if the need to evacuate occurs.
o Be prepared to shelter in place-7 days of food, water, medication for you, your family and your pets, along with an alternate heat source, extra batteries and flashlights.
o Have an emergency communications plan for your family
o Keep all your important documents stored on a thumb drive that you can access for identification and processes after a disaster.
