Matanuska-Susitna Borough

More than 1,000 Homes May Leave Floodplain

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Thursday, October 27, 2016

More accurate floodplain mapping in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough will likely move some 1,115 homes out of the floodplain. Because of decreased or dropped flood insurance costs those property owners will save more than $11.7 million over 15 years. Those are preliminary numbers on the changes from better mapping as described to the Assembly and Planning Commission this week by Develpment Services Manager Alex Strawn.

The maps won't become official until 2018 after a lengthy review process that includes the public. View Strawn's powerpoint with the preliminary numbers here. Listen to the audio of the conversation on new preliminary floodplain mapping posted here.
