Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Mayfield, Tax Exemption yes at polls

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Wednesday, October 08, 2014

Some 7,005 people cast their votes at the polls tonight in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, just 11 percent of voters. Candidate Dan Mayfield leads candidate Bill Kendig for Assembly district 5, by 293 votes. Voters supported another senior citizen and disabled veteran property tax exemption in unofficial results tonight.

District 5 includes Big Lake, south along Knik Goose Bay Road, to Port MacKenzie. Assembly Member Darcie Salmon did not seek re-election. Mayfield is Vice President of the Big Lake Community Council. Kendig is a Borough Planning Commissioner.

Voters strongly supported 5,975 to 982 a property tax exemption for $68,000 for senior citizens and disabled veterans. If this proposition is certified, the total tax exemption for a home for seniors and disabled vets will be $218,000, which is also the average value of a home in the Mat-Su today.

In District 4, Assembly Member Steve Colligan ran unopposed and garnered 730 votes from the greater Wasilla area.

For School Board, incumbents Ole Larson and Tiffany Scott both ran unopposed, gathering each more than 5,000 votes.

Voters also approved a reapportionment plan that restructures Assembly district boundaries to match state precincts. This plan will eliminate fourteen polling locations that are split by Assembly District boundaries. If adopted, the Borough will have only one remaining split precinct, or precinct that covers more than one Assembly district.

The Canvass Board will meet tomorrow at 10 am to verify poll results. The Board then begins canvassing the absentee ballots and later the questioned ballots. There are 337 questioned ballots, and 7 special needs ballots. Absentee ballots issued total 1,487. The ballots may be finalized by Oct. 17.
