Despite heavy snowfall and slick roads, 437 people turned out to receive an H1N1 vaccine on 12/17/2009 at the Menard Sports Center in Wasilla.

The vaccines are free. The event was sponsored by MAT-SU Public Health and the MAT-SU Borough.

DSC_1549"I think it went well given the weather," said MAT-SU Public Health's Paula English, the vaccine clinic manager. "I'm amazed how many people have braved the weather. And the volunteers, we couldn't do it without them."

Anyone six months and older was eligible to receive the vaccine today.

"Public Health folks are getting really good at doing this," said MAT-SU Borough Emergency Manager Tom Smayda. "They've got the steps down and are ready to put on more clinics if needed," Smayda said.

MAT-SU Public Information Officer Cindy Corey reported that at the peak of the event it took seven minutes to receive a vaccine. However, later the wait was shorter.

Both Palmer and Wasilla Senior Centers are expected to hold H1N1 clinics that are open to the public this month.
