MAT-SU—Last night (Tues.) the Assembly for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough agreed on June 9 as the date for a special election to fill the seat of mayor.
The seat became vacant when Mayor Curtis D. Menard passed away March 3. State law requires the Borough to hold a special election if the seat is vacant more than six months. Menard's term would have ended in October.
Deputy Mayor Lynne Woods is performing mayoral duties as the Deputy Mayor.
The filing period for declaring candidacy for mayor begins April 6 until April 17 at 5 p.m. The candidate for mayor must receive more than 40 percent of the votes. If not, a run-off election will be held. The two candidates who garnered the most votes would run.
