MASCOT gains two new buses

MASCOT, also known as MAT-SU Community Transit, has increased its ability to take on more riders with two new 30 passenger buses.

“The Borough is excited that MASCOT is able to expand its fleet and provide additional service to the commuters traveling to Anchorage from MAT-SU,” said Brad Sworts, Borough Transportation Division Manager. “Once people started riding buses into Anchorage they figured out how convenient and easier on their budget it is.”

The two new buses are operating primarily as commuter buses between the MAT-SU Valley and Anchorage holding 30 passengers each as well as accommodating two wheel chair positions. MASCOT is a non-profit business that has been in operation for ten years. The two new buses will help with ridership demands as the organization continues to grow.

LaMarr Anderson, Operations Manager of MASCOT, has been seeing a significant and steady increase in ridership in the first three months of 2009 with an eight percent growth. “Just in April this year we have seen 102 riders the first week, 164 riders the second week and 199 riders in the third week.” Anderson said.

A $500,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration and a $125,000 matching grant from the Borough paid for four new buses, which includes two 20 passenger buses, two 30 passenger buses, and a driving simulator.

Lou Friend, Director of MASCOT, was optimistic about the increasing ridership. “The Borough is helping meet ridership demands and community needs.” Friend said.

The existing buses hold 20 passengers and were often at capacity on the Anchorage route, sometimes requiring an additional bus for overflow passengers.

Riders can be picked up at several locations such as both Wasilla and Palmer Carrs parking lots, Wal-Mart and the Trunk Road park and ride.
