The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly approved the FY 21 Budget last night after just two days of deliberations. The areawide mill rate was set at 10.322 and the non-areawide at .511.
Before deliberations began on May 26, there were four public hearings where the public had an opportunity to weigh in. Public involvement in this years budget posed a significant challenge, due to COVID-19 related public meeting closures and social distancing. In previous years, the public were able to testify at three different locations on three different days throughout the Borough. But that simply wasn't possible this year. However, dIspite the numerous obsticles, the budget approval process marched on. The Assembly submitted their amendments to the Managers Proposed Budget through the Clerk, which were then deliberated on this week and approved. There is now a short period given for reconsideration that ends today, May 29 at 5 pm. There is also an opportunity for the Mayor to veto amendments to the proposed budget. He has until June 2 at 6pm to submit it.
