Fireworks Legal on New Year's Eve

The personal use of fireworks is legal on private property in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough on New Year's Eve only beginning at 6 pm and ending at 1 am on January 1. Please be courteous to your neighbors and follow the rules. Fines are up to $500.

Borough Restrictions on Fireworks

You cannot shoot off fireworks in these restricted areas:

  1. Within one thousand two hundred fifty (1,250') feet of any health care facility or assisted living facility, library or school.
  2. Within five hundred (500') feet of any automotive service station or other premises where flammable liquids or gases are stored.
  3. Within or from any structure or vehicles.

Safety

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to watch an authorized public display. If you choose to discharge fireworks, remember these tips.

  • Always check with the Fire Department, Alaska Division of Forestry and Alaska State Troopers to make sure special bans on fireworks and/or burning are not in effect.
  • Always follow the directions
  • Have a sober adult present
  • Use only outdoors and do not use them near dry grass or other flammable materials
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person or an animal
  • Do not carry them in your pockets, and keep water handy

Remember, fireworks can cause wildfires and serious personal injury.
