Earthquake Preparedness

If the earthquake and associated tsunami in Japan has the next Alaska earthquake on your mind you have to ask yourself, Am I prepared? The key to surviving any disaster is PLANNING.

Consider this when creating your family's earthquake plan:

  1. The time of day
  2. Location of family members at the time
  3. The type of structure
  4. Utilities that supply that structure
    • Paint these white or florescent so the area can be visible when it's smoky. Have a wrench next to your gas shutoff. Call your local gas company to find out exactly how to do this. Generally they'll send a representative to show you the right procedure. Do not turn the gas valve back on after an earthquake, unless a qualified person has checked extensively for gas leaks.

Every plan should include:

  1. Escape routes at home and work
    • Place a pair of shoes and a flashlight under the bed of every family member. Chances are, the electricity will be out and there may be broken glass when trying to evacuate.
  2. Reunification site
  3. Telephone contact for communication
  4. 72hr supply kit

Discuss plans with all household members. Teenagers and adult members of the household should share in the actual preparation decisions. Be sure to consider any special needs or disabilities of family members and unique natural or man-made hazards near your home. Make sure everyone in your household knows where the closest fire station, hospital, and police station are.
