Disaster Funds Approved for Talkeetna Revetment & Yoder Road, 2012 Flood

On Sept. 21, 2012, nearly half the town of Talkeetna evacuated due to rising river water from a relentless fall rainstorm. The night before, angry Montana Creek took a bite out of Yoder Road and turned its roadbed into a river. Some three and a half years later, the Borough receives, today, the good news of being awarded $336,640 in federal and state disaster relief funds.

“We’re elated,” said Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly Member Randall Kowalke. “These repair funds are absolutely essential to a prepared community.”

Borough Mayor Vern Halter congratulated the Borough team who tracked the damages and persisted in acquiring disaster funding. “This is important work,” he said.

The Talkeetna revetment will receive a grant for $182,718.
Yoder Road revetment will receive $153,922.

The funds allow design and permitting, but not completion of the projects, said Casey Cook, Borough Emergency Manager. “We continue to work with the state and FEMA for full funding of the recovery projects. It is reassuring to receive this approval to be able to continue to move forward on the recovery efforts for the 2012 flood disaster.”

The revetment that holds back the Talkeetna River from the low-lying town was partly repaired after the flood. FEMA is approving $137,038.50 in funding. The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is matching $45,679.50.

“Without this grant we couldn’t afford the cost of those repairs,” said Terry Dolan, director of Public Works who collaborated with Emergency Manager Cook and Borough staff on the grant submissions.

For the Yoder Road revetment, FEMA is awarding $115,441.50. The State match is $38,480.50.

The 2012 Mat-Su Flood disaster was declared a federal disaster. Flood waters from several rivers and creeks reached across the Borough, causing damage to private and public property.
