PALMER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, MOOSE LODGE—Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss said the Assembly searched the nation for the right manager and found him in John Moosey. Moosey had anticipated the recent economic downturn, DeVilbiss said, and prepared his county of Chisago, Minnesota, in advance, DeVilbiss told the Palmer Chamber of Commerce today.
Matanuska-Susitna Borough Manager Moosey briefly greeted the Palmer business crowd. In the Moose Lodge and in the city with the Palmer High moose mascot, Manager Moosey could not leave unaddressed his cloven, hooved, ungulate surname. As laughter spread across the room, Manager Moosey admitted the name helped him single himself out from the herd for the Borough's top job.
Moosey shared with the crowd that he knew he wanted to be an administrator since he was a kid. He said he had often heard his grumpy neighbor, Mr. Jeffers, complaining about some negligent city service. Moosey said he wondered why the man only complained and did nothing about it. The experience sparked in him a commitment to delivering public services well.
Moosey has served as a manager for 25 years and holds a Master of Public Administration from Kent State. In his first two days on the job he has met with two chambers of commerce, Wasilla Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. His first day stretched until 11 pm at an Assembly meeting. He described the Assembly as a great group addressing tough issues who listens late into the night to public testimony on how to do things better.
Among his goals two days on the job: to run a hard-working, service oriented government that is transparent in its operations.
Tonight, Manager Moosey heads to the first public hearing on this year's proposed Borough budget. The meeting begins in Wasilla at 6 pm at the Central MAT-SU Public Safety Building at Lucille and Swanson streets.
