MAT-SU -- On Thursday, April 28, VCRS, or Valley Community for Recycling Solutions, and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough received the Outstanding Recycling Community award from ALPAR (Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling). This award celebrates the completion of the facility and all the benefits that the Resource Recovery and Training Park offers the community, such as field trip presentations for children and adults and recycling curriculum for 4th through 8th graders. Local artist Rebecca Lyon created the award utilizing recycled materials.

VCRS is an educational haven for architects and green building students from around the world. The building itself was constructed with 35 percent recycled content including 16” wall insulation made from recycled paper constructed by the local company Thermo-Kool. VCRS aims to divert 25 percent, or 60,000 tons of waste from the landfill by recycling. The center is among the contributors that sells 12,000 tons of recovered paper, annually, to International Paper.

ALPAR is a privately funded, non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating litter and increasing economically-viable recycling in Alaska. Founded in 1982 by a group of dedicated Alaskan business leaders, ALPAR's programs help clean up Alaska's communities.
