Some furry friends need a little extra attention, such as medical and elderly care and are often passed over at the Animal Shelter. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Animal Care is partnering with the national nonprofit, Pets for Patriots, to end animal homelessness and enrich the lives of our military members.

“We’re delighted to work with Mat-Su Animal Care to give these last-chance pets a second chance at life and, in so doing, to enhance the lives of veterans in the community,” said Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots.

If you’re not a puppy or kitten, your odds of going home are slimmer. The program asks U.S. military veterans and service members to adopt:

  • a dog or cat two years or older,
  • a bigger dog, more than 40 pounds regardless of age
  • or a special needs dog or cat

Program

The national program offers some incentives to veterans and service members for adopting.

  • Joining Pets for Patriots is free for military members or veterans
  • 25% off the Borough adoption fee with the Pets for Patriots card
  • $150 gift card for food and supplies, upon proof of adoption
  • access to discounted veterinary care with participating veterinarians
  • discounts on food and supplies through participating vendors

Application Process

Animal Care Manager Carol Vardeman saw the great potential for the program’s success here given the Mat-Su’s strong veteran and service member population. “Veterans lives can change when they save an at-risk shelter dog or cat. The companionship also offers proven health benefits,” Vardeman said. Apply through Pets for Patriots http://petsforpatriots.org/ and provide proof of military service or honorable discharge. Approval typically takes one to two business days. Then visit MSB Animal Care in Palmer for assistance in choosing a new best friend.
