Animal Shelter closes Jan. 26 for catch up

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Andypup2MAT-SU— The MAT-SU Borough Animal Shelter will be closed on January 26 to allow staff to catch up on cleaning the facility and organizing the donations. On Jan. 10 Animal Shelter staff rescued 157 dogs from a breeder's lot in Montana Creek. The dogs were emaciated and living in poor conditions.

Since then, long hours have been put in by staff to manage the influx of dogs. And tremendous interest in the dogs and the Animal Shelter continues to grow. Within the last ten days, more than 150 new friends joined the Borough Facebook page to learn how they could help and to stay tuned to news about the dogs.

Donations are coming in from everywhere and in all forms: dog food, dog houses, carpet samples, cash, etc. The carpentry students at the Alaska Job Corps Center recently built 74 dog houses for the shelter and delivered them today.

Thanks so much for all your support. We just have a few adoptable dogs left so most of the huskies are indoors and on the mend. Monday, January 24 at 6pm is the next volunteer orientation, if you're interested in relieving the volunteers who have been SO SPECTACULAR this crazy busy week. Volunteer duties are as vast as you wish. See the list of duties here: http://www.matsugov.us/animalcare#volunteering

And, thanks again!!

Hey, I just got the shipping receipt from Alaska Mill & Feed - Wow, you guys are the best!  160 bags of Science Diet, 90 bales of straw, and a piles of food bowls. Yea, Alaskans!!

It was a great weekend. Your continued generosity completed our need for dog houses and building materials. Such a relief to see that all the huskies are in houses with a covering over their outdoor kennels. They are gaining weight by the ounces and the donated medications have been a great help with quick delivery. The six puppies born in the truck on the way to Palmer look to have doubled in size since I saw them last on Friday. So sweet.

Thanks so much for the towels and other bedding. The washing machine is going almost non-stop. Sure hope the new industrial washer & dryer holds up their end of the bargain! And, thank you to Carpet World for the samples for the dog houses. Cozy bottoms...
