Fuel being offloaded from overturned tanker

Oct. 7, 9:43 pm—Two vacuum trucks were offloading fuel from the overturned tanker on the Glenn Highway near Chickaloon tonight. The hazardous materials crew came from Palmer.

Fire Chief James Steel of the Central MAT-SU Fire Department said much less of the fuel may have spilled than originally thought, up to 2,000 gallons of the 8,800 gallons of heating oil. The driver of the vehicle was injured and taken to MAT-SU Regional Medical Center. Steel said no traffic is backed up any longer, a lane is open. He expects to be on scene until possibly 2 a.m.
