EMTs take flight while training

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Sunday, June 06, 2010

MAT-SU— EMTs from around the MAT-SU Borough will be practicing this week to care for critical patients while in flight. Though it is rare for MAT-SU EMTs to be called on for this role, there are times when our regular medevac resources are unavailable.

Our local ambulance personnel can find themselves thrust suddenly into the role of flight medic in an aircraft that was never meant for patient transport.

On June 9 and 10, a select group of EMS responders will have classroom instruction in the needed skills, and on Saturday, June 12, they will be outside practicing the role of flight medic in the realistic environment of a moving aircraft. About 14 EMTs of various levels will take part in this annual course.

For more information or for reporters who want to cover the training, please call EMS Training Coordinator Bill Mackreth at 373-8809. (The best times to show up mostly Saturday late morning and early afternoon, but possibly Thursday evening as well.)
