2011 Salmon Science & Conservation Symposium

The Mat-Su Basin Salmon Habitat Partnership is hosting the fourth annual Science and Conservation Symposium in Wasilla, November 9 & 10, 9a.m. – 5p.m. at the Central MAT-SU Public Safety Building. A notable addition to this year’s event is keynote speaker David Montgomery, winner of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant and professor of geomorphology at the University of Washington. David is the author of “King of Fish: The Thousand Year Run of Salmon,” and he will be speaking about the fate of wild salmon in Alaska and the history of salmon runs throughout their former range at 9 am on Wednesday, November 9.

The symposium started in 2008 as a forum to share information on conservation and research projects related to MAT-SU Basin watersheds, salmon, and their habitat. Partnership organizations sponsoring the event include the MAT-SU Borough, The Nature Conservancy, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Geological Survey, Conoco Phillips Alaska, Inc., and the US Army Corps of Engineers. This year, the agenda will include over 20 presenters covering topics such as salmon spawning distribution, habitat restoration, stormwater management, and water quality.   
The symposium is free and open to the public.
