The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is at risk of becoming an "air quality non-attainment area" for violations of fine particulate matter standards as measured at the Butte air quality monitor. Addressing this issue, the Assembly passed ordinance 19-032 in March of 2019, which updated Mat-Su air quality code with new language that, among other things:
This project will work with vendors to educate residents about Mat-Su air quality issues and changes in code in a manner that improves air quality in the borough. It will involve advertising air quality messages through traditional and digital media outlets, as well as mailers to Butte Community Council residents.
This project will help educate local citizens about local air quality issues, MSB code changes related to air quality, and result in positive behavior changes that should improve air quality and associated positive health effects of breathing cleaner air.
