Trails make a community

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Wednesday, January 02, 2013

MAT-SU— Some 150 trail enthusiasts turned out Dec. 28 to see what all the fun is about at the new cross-country ski trails at Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass. In the first race ever at the new nordic ski area, 24 teams signed up for a total of 72 racers. View the video and hear cowbells ring in the sweep of racers, including trail designer and former Olympic nordic skier Bill Spencer who says "trails make a community." Assembly Members Jim Colver and Warren Keogh and Mayor Larry DeVilbiss cut the ceremonial ribbon alongside Borough Manager John Moosey and members of the community.

"This  is just the beginning. I see this as a glowing ember of a very large bonfire—We're just going to keep adding wood to the bonfire until we have 40 to 50 km of trails," said Assembly Member Colver.
