ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster survivor assistance teams have begun canvassing Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the Municipality of Anchorage to support those affected by the Nov. 30 earthquake. They will soon be visiting survivors in Kenai Peninsula Borough.
 
These teams, which arrived in the state Feb. 7, are able to help survivors register for FEMA assistance. They can also check and verify information already provided to FEMA by survivors, update their records and discuss next steps in their recovery process.
 
The teams are meeting with representatives of community- and faith-based organizations, and at the request of local officials are available to provide assistance at public facilities or churches.
 
Disaster survivor assistance teams can be identified by the official FEMA identification badges around their necks or pinned to their jackets. Residents are encouraged to ask for official identification before providing personal information.
 
Those affected by the earthquake don’t have to wait to register for FEMA assistance with a disaster survivor assistance team. Survivors may apply for assistance the following ways:

·       Visit DisasterAssistance.gov.
Call 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Those who use 711 or Video Relay Services may also call  800-621-3362. Those who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585.
·       Multilingual operators are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time seven days a week.
 
By registering with FEMA, survivors may be considered for federal disaster assistance such as:
·       Grants to rent a temporary place to live.
·       Grants for essential home repairs not covered by insurance.
·       Grants for disaster-related needs not covered by insurance such as medical, dental, transportation, moving and storage fees, personal property loss and child care.
 
Registering with FEMA is also the first step in qualifying for help from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Low-interest disaster loans from SBA are available to businesses of all sizes including landlords, and to homeowners, renters and private non-profit organizations to cover losses not fully compensated by insurance. Low-interest disaster loans help fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged real estate and personal property.  Economic injury disaster loans are available to businesses and private non-profits to assist with working capital.
