POINT MACKENZIE ROAD - The fire south of Point MacKenzie Road has consumed 691 acres and is heading toward the Goose Bay State Game Refuge. Fire officials were impressed to find that the residents of a subdivision south of the fire off South Donahue Avenue had made defensible space against the fire, by earlier clearing brush and trees away from structures. Farther north, two structures were lost to flames. The MAT-SU Borough and the Division of Forestry have been fighting the fire. Chugiak fire has a strike team on scene. Sixty MAT-SU firefighters responded. Two air tankers have been dropping retardant in efforts to attack the head of the fire. Helicopters are dumping water. Some 14 tankers and engines are on scene. Animal Care is on scene for possible evacuations of animals. Red Cross is on scene. The origin of the fire is located south of mile five on Point MacKenzie Road. Point MacKenzie Road is located past mile 17 on Knik-Goose Bay Road. A map is attached that show the approximate area of the fire. A second fire in Big Lake about 1+ acre is under control.
