In April, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Central Landfill replaced its 25-year-old residential scales.  It is now time for required semi-annual maintenance, a process that will occur every six months.  Some 25,000 residential trips to the landfill are made per month utilizing the residential scales.  That means more than 300,000 weigh ins/outs on average in a six-month period.

In order to ensure the scales remain in top shape and calibrated, we ask that you understand our need to close for one day every six months to accomplish this preventive maintenance. In the future we will coordinate to perform this on a holiday we would normally be closed.

CLOSURE DATE
The residential scales will be closed on Nov. 16, 2015.

If you are intent on cleaning up the yard or house and want to discard any waste during the closure, there are several alternate locations.  The Butte Transfer Station is located on the access road to Butte Elementary School, about 7.5 miles south of Palmer and 12 miles southeast of the Central Landfill.  The Big Lake Transfer Site is located at 13507 Hollywood Road in the town of Big Lake.

Here is the link on the Borough website to maps of the transfer stations:
