Glenn Highway Mile 67 - An air tanker is dropping retardant on a fire at Mile 67 of the Glenn Highway, and a helicopter is dumping water slowing a fire that was climbing a steep incline. The Glenn Highway is closed in both directions until possibly 5-6 pm tonight,(Sunday). The Kings River fire is five to eight acres, about one mile east of the Kings River Bridge, six miles east of Sutton. Twenty homes are within a mile of the fire. One structure is threatened. The Alaska Division of Forestry and Anchorage fire are working the fire. A structural team is protecting it, including an Anchorage task force that was diverted from the ongoing 700-acre Point MacKenzie Road fire. Also on scene are the Tazlina hotshots, a Forestry's 10-person Pioneer Peak fire crew, eight smoke jumpers, an air tanker, and helicopter. Alaska State Troopers have evacuated the Kings River campground. One civilian at the campground twisted her ankle. Fire fighters are cautiously optimistic they can control the fire with retardant. Attached is a more accurate map of the fire's path.
