Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Vern Halter and Deputy Mayor Matthew Beck recognized a 4th grader for her leadership and drive last night. Aubrey Virgin accepted a mayoral proclamation at the Assembly meeting in Palmer. She is one of five kids to earn the award given by Alaska Communications and the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Aubrey, a student at Pioneer Peak Elementary, has been one of the top Alaska fundraisers for heart disease research. She runs in the annual Heart Run and has worked as a Heart Association ambassador. Aubrey was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease as a toddler and has made it her mission to raise awareness about the condition and to start her own 5K race to raise money for the Kawasaki Disease Foundation. Aubrey hopes to find a cause and cure for the disease through her fundraising.

Hear Mayor Halter read the proclamation and see photos posted here.
