10,000 Christmas trees to be recycled locally

Mat-Su | Patty Sullivan | Monday, December 20, 2010

boroughsealMAT-SU— After the celebration, remember you can take your Christmas tree to a few locations for recycling until Jan. 15. Trees are turned into wood-chips for trails, paths, and gardens.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough and ALPAR, Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling, are sponsoring this event.

CARRS grocery stores are participating in Anchorage, Eagle River, and Palmer. Trees can also be taken to the MAT-SU Borough Central Landfill on 49th State Street off the Palmer-Wasilla Highway near Palmer.

Begin dropping off trees Monday, Dec. 28 until Friday, Jan. 15. Please remove all decorations. Wreaths cannot be accepted because of wires. The wood-chips are distributed to local non-profits and government agencies. ALPAR estimates that more than 10,000 Christmas trees will be recycled this year, saving valuable landfill space.

Media sponsors are the Anchorage Daily News, Mix 103.1 and KBEAR 104.1 and GCI.
